Transmission line tower is a structure supporting conductors and lightning conductors of high-voltage or ultra-high voltage overhead transmission lines.

According to its shape, it is generally divided into five types: wine cup type, cat head type, top type, dry type and barrel type. According to its purpose, it is divided into: tension tower, tangent tower, corner tower, transposition tower (replacing the conductor phase position tower), terminal tower and crossing tower. 

According to the use of towers in transmission lines, they can be divided into straight-line towers, tension towers, angle towers, transposition towers, crossing towers and terminal towers. Straight line towers and tension towers shall be set at the straight section of the line, corner towers shall be set at the turning point of the transmission line, higher crossing towers shall be set at both sides of the crossed object, transposition towers shall be set every certain distance to balance the impedance of the three conductors, and terminal towers shall be set at the connection between the transmission line and the substation structure.

According to the classification of structural materials of towers, the towers used in transmission lines mainly include reinforced concrete poles and steel towers.

In terms of maintaining the overall stability of the structure, it can be divided into self-supporting tower and guyed tower.

There are various structural forms of towers. From the perspective of transmission lines that have been built in China, towers are often used in transmission lines with voltage levels greater than; When the voltage level is less than, reinforced concrete poles are often used.

Tower stay wire is used to balance the horizontal load and conductor tension of the tower and reduce the bending moment at the root of the tower. The use of stay wire can reduce the consumption of tower materials and reduce the cost of the line. The use of Guyed poles and towers is common on the route in flat areas. The type and shape of the tower shall be selected according to the voltage level, circuit number, terrain and geological conditions of the transmission line while meeting the electrical requirements through checking calculation, and the tower form suitable for a certain project shall be selected in combination with the actual situation. Through economic and technical comparison, the tower type with advanced technology and reasonable economy shall be finally selected.
