At 2,063 feet tall, the KVLY-TV mast is currently the tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth tallest structure in the world. But because it is supported by braces and is not a self-supporting structure, it is often not included in lists of the tallest buildings or towers in the world.
When completed in 1963, the soaring radio mast was the tallest structure in the world until it was surpassed ten years later by the Warsaw radio mast. When the mast in Warsaw unexpectedly collapsed in 1991, the KVLY-TV mast reclaimed that title until Dubai’s 2,722-foot tall Burj Khalifa was completed in 2010.
In superlatives, the KVLY-TV mast is the first man-made structure to exceed 2,000 feet in height. The structure itself stands on 160 acres with anchor bolts. Owned by Gray Television in Atlanta, Georgia, the tower broadcasts 356 kilowatts on KVLY-TV Channel 44 (PSIP Channel 11, an NBC/CBS affiliate) in Fargo, North Dakota. The tower provides a broadcast area of approximately 9,700 square miles.
Five miles away stands the KRDK-TV mast, which at 2,060 feet is currently the fifth tallest structure in the world. Completed in 1966, the mast was destroyed and rebuilt twice: once in 1968 when a Marine helicopter crashed into it, killing all four on board; ice storm.
